Workshops

Workshops provide an interactive forum for in-depth discussion, exchange of ideas, and community building around emerging topics and research agendas in the field of Human–Computer Interaction.

Workshops are designed to encourage active engagement rather than a sequence of conventional paper presentations. They bring together academics, researchers, students, practitioners, and professionals who share an interest in a specific topic.

Accepted Workshops will be featured on the HCII 2027 website, together with a description of the Workshop and short biographies of the organizer(s).

Submit a Workshop proposal

Prospective Workshop organizers should submit their proposal (2-3 pages).

Deadline for proposal submission: 30 November 2026

Typically 8–25 participants

Proposal length:

What to submit:

Prospective Workshop organizers should submit their proposal through the Conference Management System (CMS). The proposal should be about 2 to 3 pages long and include the following

  • A description of the topic of the Workshop and its importance.
  • The description of how the Workshop will be conducted and an indicative agenda.
  • Expected outcomes of the Workshop.
  • Useful links and references.
  • Short biographies of the organizer(s).

If your Workshop is accepted

Organizers are responsible for developing the Workshop from an accepted proposal into an active Conference event.

You will be expected to:

1. Prepare a Call for Participation

Develop a clear Call for Participation describing:

  • the Workshop topic and objectives;
  • the intended audience;
  • the types of contributions you are seeking;
  • submission requirements;
  • important dates;
  • the review and selection process; and
  • the planned Workshop activities.

The Call for Participation will be made available through the HCII 2027 website and may also be distributed through other appropriate channels.

2. Promote your Workshop

Publicize the Workshop, as early and as widely as possible, within relevant research and professional communities.

You are encouraged to use:

  • professional and academic networks;
  • mailing lists;
  • social media;
  • your institutional, project, or personal websites; and
  • other relevant communication channels.

The aim is to attract a diverse group of participants with expertise and perspectives relevant to the Workshop topic and solicit submissions.

You are also encouraged to solicit submissions through targeted invitations to potential participants.

3. Manage submissions and peer review

Workshop organizers are responsible for organizing the review and selection of Workshop contributions.

This includes:

  • receiving participant submissions;
  • arranging an appropriate peer-review process;
  • selecting contributions that fit the Workshop objectives; and
  • notifying contributors of the outcome.

The submission of proposals and the notification of the review outcome will be handled through the CMS. The final group of participants should support a productive and coherent discussion of the Workshop topic.

4. Develop the Workshop program

Prepare a final agenda that balances presentation, discussion, collaboration, and other interactive activities.

The program should encourage active participation from all Workshop attendees.

Workshop format

Workshops are designed as 4-hour interactive sessions, including a refreshment break.

Rather than relying primarily on formal presentations, organizers should make effective use of the available time for:

  • discussion;
  • collaborative activities;
  • exchange of perspectives;
  • networking; and
  • development of shared outcomes.

Detailed scheduling and participation arrangements for HCII 2027 will be communicated to the organizers of accepted Workshops.

Participation

Workshops will run as hybrid events. Organizers are expected to attend on-site, while participants will have the option to attend either on-site or on-line.

Workshops are ‘closed’ events intended for authors and contributors whose submissions have been accepted by the Workshop organizers.

Workshop registration is complimentary for registered Conference participants or requires a fee of $95 per Workshop for non-registered Conference participants.

Workshop organizers should clearly communicate participation and registration requirements in their Call for Participation.

Workshops are intended to support active interaction among participants.

A Workshop should normally have enough accepted contributors to sustain meaningful discussion while remaining small enough for everyone to participate effectively.

Expected number of participants: 8–25.

If participation falls outside the expected range, arrangements should be discussed with the Conference organizers.

Publication of Workshop contributions

The contributions to be presented in the context of Workshops will not be automatically included in the Conference proceedings.

Authors of accepted Workshop presentations can consider submitting their work for peer-review either as a paper or a poster.

Designing an effective Workshop

A successful Workshop should do more than bring people together around a common topic. It should create opportunities for participants to interact, contribute, and build something collectively.

When developing your format, consider:

  • What should participants know or prepare before attending?
  • How will you ensure that everyone has an opportunity to contribute?
  • How much time will be devoted to presentations versus discussion?
  • Which activities will help participants exchange perspectives?
  • What should participants take away from the Workshop?
  • Is there a meaningful outcome that can continue beyond the Conference?

Workshop Organization

The Workshop duration will be 4 hours, including a 30-minute refreshment break. Workshops will take place on 26 and 27 July 2027, either in the morning (08:30-12:30) or in the afternoon (13:30-17:30), as ‘hybrid’ events.

For each Workshop a meeting room will be allocated in a U-shape setup. Each room will be equipped with:

  • A projection screen and a projector or a large monitor.
  • A sound system with a microphone.
  • A camera.
  • A laptop PC connected to the projector/monitor, the sound system and the camera.

Ready to submit?

Before submitting, make sure that your proposal:

  • clearly defines the Workshop topic;
  • explains why the topic is timely and relevant;
  • identifies the intended participants or community;
  • describes how the Workshop will be conducted;
  • includes an indicative agenda;
  • emphasizes interaction and active engagement;
  • identifies meaningful expected outcomes;
  • includes relevant references or links; and
  • provides short biographies of the organizers.
